MGVCL handles almost every business roof in the city
MGVCL, the state distribution company for central Gujarat, supplies Vadodara city, and its corporate office is at Race Course. A small part of the city is served by a different licensee with its own tariff schedule approved by GERC, so if your bill shows a company other than MGVCL, apply to that company instead.
For an LT shop or office, the file moves through the sub-division printed on your bill. MGVCL's nodal officer list puts most of the western business belt under the Vishwamitri West division, whose sub-divisions include Alkapuri, Fatehgunj, Gotri, Akota and Vasna. HT consumers, such as big hospitals and hotels, follow MGVCL's separate checklist for the HT net metering agreement, which goes to the DSM cell at the corporate office.
Alkapuri and RC Dutt Road: converted bungalows are the easy case
A number of offices, clinics and banks here work out of what were once family bungalows. One owner, one roof and usually one meter means no association vote and no question of whose connection gets the plant. Check the roof slab, any old water tanks and nearby trees, which can shade a low roof for part of the afternoon.
The office complexes and hotels on the same stretch are a different story. Each unit has its own meter, and the terrace is shared. A plant there can connect to one consumer only: the association's common meter for lifts, pumps and corridor lights, or one owner with a written right to terrace space. MGVCL publishes a separate list of documents for a common meter connection, which is the one an association would use.
Race Course Circle, Sayajigunj and Fatehgunj
- Race Course Circle: office complexes, hospitals, restaurants and showrooms. Offices with demand-based LTMD connections count solar only against what they use between 7 am and 6 pm over the month, so restaurants with evening trade gain less than offices.
- Sayajigunj: commercial complexes, hotels and shops near the railway station. Older buildings often carry tanks and telecom equipment on the terrace, so measure what is actually free.
- Fatehgunj and the university area: coaching institutes and hostels with AC classrooms through the day. Classes that run in morning and afternoon batches match solar hours well; evening batches will still draw from the grid.
Gotri, Vasna-Bhayli Road, Akota and Old Padra Road
The newer west-side corridors have hospitals, clinics, showrooms and fresh commercial complexes. Hospitals run every day and the larger ones are usually on HT, where solar is set off against use between 7 am and 6 pm on the same day; with steady daily load, little is left over. In a newer complex, settle terrace rights with the developer or association before the space is allotted to something else.
On Akota and Old Padra Road, office complexes, showrooms and clinics are a mix of small Non-RGP connections and LTMD. A Non-RGP shop nets solar against the whole billing cycle, which is the most forgiving arrangement. Under any category, surplus left after set-off is bought by MGVCL at a rate linked to GUVNL's recent solar tenders; it does not roll over to the next bill.
Rented space, approvals and tax
GERC's rules allow rooftop solar on rented premises and systems owned by a third party. The landlord's written consent is what you will be asked for. Since the 2024 amendment, systems up to 10 kW need no technical feasibility study and the power company has to keep to fixed timelines. Offices and shops get no PM Surya Ghar subsidy; ask your CA about accelerated depreciation.
In a complex, the association will usually want to know who maintains the panels, who pays if the terrace waterproofing is disturbed, and what happens when a lease ends. Put those answers into the consent letter, so a later committee does not reopen them.
When the Vishwamitri floods
Parts of the city near the Vishwamitri are low-lying, and VMC publishes live river and dam levels on its Water Level Statistics page. If your basement or ground floor has flooded before, keep the inverter and distribution boxes well above that mark. If you want, we can connect you with one checked installer who works in your part of Vadodara.
