A dense estate built for small workshops
According to the city chamber of commerce's own history page, the Makarpura estate's industries association was formed in 1969 and its growth led to the chamber being set up in 1980. GIDC figures printed in the MSME-DI district profile (data from around 2011) give 355.08 ha acquired, 248.55 ha developed and 2,370 plots, with 2,346 units in production at the time, the highest plot count in that district table.
So the typical unit here is not a giant plant. It is a shed of modest size, wall to wall with its neighbours, running lathes, CNC machines, welding sets, press brakes and an air compressor. GIDC still classes the estate as an engineering zone in its 2025 auction notices for the Vadodara region.
Why a machine shop's day suits solar
A one-shift or two-shift engineering unit draws most of its power between morning and early evening. Under GERC's rules, LTMD solar is set off against use between 7 am and 6 pm over the billing cycle (HT: the same hours, day by day), so a shop that runs mainly in daylight can use most of what its roof makes.
Compressors deserve a separate look. They often run through lunch and between jobs, so they soak up midday generation that would otherwise be exported. Surplus is not carried forward and is bought by the DISCOM at a lower rate, so ask the installer to size the plant from your actual daytime load, not from the size of the roof.
Look at the roof before the panels
An estate of this age will have many old sheds. Before any design, ask for a check of:
- Purlins and trusses: rust at the bolts and sagging spans are common in older sheds, and panels with their mounting add steady weight
- Sheet type: cement sheets are brittle, and nobody should walk on them without proper boards or walkways
- Leaks: old fixing holes and lapped joints should be sealed or the sheet replaced before mounting rails go on
- Shade from next door: a neighbour's taller shed, water tank or chimney can shade a strip of your roof for part of the day
- Fumes and heat: if you have a paint booth, heat treatment or a furnace exhaust, keep panels away from where it vents
Rented sheds and changed owners
In an estate this old, a shed may be held from GIDC by someone other than the unit using it, or may have changed hands more than once. Gujarat's rules allow rooftop solar on rented premises and also allow a system owned by a third party, with you paying for the power. What you need is the owner's written consent for the roof, and papers that match the name on the electricity bill. Sort out any name mismatch with MGVCL before applying, or the file can stall.
Which MGVCL office handles Makarpura
Makarpura falls in MGVCL's Baroda City Circle. Under Lalbaug Division the company even has a sub-division simply called GIDC, alongside the nearby Manjalpur and Tarsali sub-divisions. Check the sub-division name printed on your own bill; that is the office that handles your file.
Small systems are quicker: since the 2024 amendment, nothing up to 10 kW needs a technical feasibility study, and MGVCL has fixed timelines to approve. Bigger plants on LT go through electrical inspector drawing approval. If you want, we can connect you with one checked installer who works in Makarpura and handles this paperwork.
