Thousands of plots, most of them modest
GIDC's estate table for October 2026 lists 8,397 plots of all types at Ankleshwar (industrial, commercial, residential and sheds), covering about 1,166 hectares of plot area, with 7,429 allotted, and marks the estate Saturated. An older MSME-DI profile of Bharuch (GIDC figures from around 2011) counted 1,891 industrial plots and 1,809 units in production, and a dyes and chemicals cluster of about 920 working units.
Spread across that many plots, the average unit does not have a huge roof. On a crowded plot the usable area may be only the part of the shed that is free of vents, ducts and stacks, plus an office block or a store. The plant size here usually follows the clean, unshaded sheet you have, not the bill.
Reactors that never stop, and the 7 am to 6 pm window
Batch reactors, distillation columns, cooling towers, chillers and effluent pumps rarely switch off in a dye or API unit. For solar this is good news: a load that stays up through the afternoon means the panels' output is used inside the factory instead of being pushed to the grid.
Units of this kind are usually on an LT demand-based (LTMD) or HT connection, where GERC's rules set solar off only against use between 7 am and 6 pm (over the billing cycle for LTMD, on the same day for HT). The night shift gets nothing from the panels, and surplus is not carried forward.
So the figure that matters is your lowest steady draw on a sunny afternoon. Ask the installer to read your meter's load profile, or a month of hourly readings, before fixing the size.
Acid mist and dryer dust: choosing the structure
Depending on what is made next door, the air over an Ankleshwar roof can carry acid mist, chlorides and fine powder from spray dryers and bagging lines. Plain galvanised steel can start rusting early at cut edges and bolt holes in such air.
- Ask whether the mounting is hot-dip galvanised to a stated coating thickness, or aluminium, and whether cut ends are treated after cutting.
- Insist on stainless fasteners, with isolating washers wherever aluminium touches steel.
- Ask for connectors and junction boxes sealed for wet, chemical air, and for cable trays that keep cables off the sheet.
- Plan cleaning more often than a town roof would need. Use plain water and a soft brush on the glass, never a solvent from the plant.
Solvent stores, classified areas and where the inverter goes
Chemical and pharma plots often store solvents, and parts of a plant may be marked as hazardous areas in its safety plan. Inverters, combiner boxes and isolators can spark, so they are normally kept outside any classified zone, close to the main LT panel room, with a shut-off the fire crew can reach quickly.
Before the layout is drawn, give the installer your hazardous area drawing and the conditions in your fire NOC. Leave walkways to vents, scrubbers and roof hatches. Over a store where a roof leak would be expensive, ask about clamp mounting on standing-seam sheet, which avoids drilling the roof at all.
Old sheets, rented sheds and the DGVCL file
Older sheds in an estate of this age have often been re-sheeted in patches. If the sheet is brittle or the purlins are light, replacing the roof first and then adding solar is usually less trouble than chasing leaks under live panels.
Gujarat's rules allow rooftop solar on rented premises, and also a system owned by a third party who sells you the power. Either way, get the landlord's written consent. Since the 2024 amendment, systems up to 10 kW need no technical feasibility study, and DGVCL has fixed approval timelines.
Estate units are handled by DGVCL's Ankleshwar Industrial division, which has its own Ankleshwar GIDC sub-division. Your bill names the sub-division for your connection. For depreciation on the plant, ask your CA. If you want, we can connect you with one checked installer who works in Ankleshwar.
