Torrent or UGVCL: the boundary question
Most of Naroda GIDC is billed by Torrent Power, which holds the licence for Ahmedabad city. Torrent's zone-wise list for solar documents includes a Naroda zone, and its papers go to a Plug Point customer centre in Shahibaug rather than an office in the estate itself.
The catch is that UGVCL also runs sub-divisions called Naroda and Naroda Urban under its Sabarmati Division. Units on the fringe of the estate may get a UGVCL bill. The two routes use different forms, offices and payment pages, so an application filed with the wrong company simply stalls. Look at the top of your latest bill and give the installer that name and your consumer or service number before anything else.
On Torrent supply, business connections fall under Non-RGP, LTMD or HTMD-1. On UGVCL they are Non-RGP, LTMD or HTP-I. The solar set-off rules are the same either way, because they come from GERC.
Pharma and API units: a load that suits daytime solar
An older, undated MSME-DI district profile lists a dyestuff cluster at Naroda with 154 units. Engineering, plastics, textiles, food and packaging fill out the rest.
API and formulation plants run air handling units, chillers and dehumidifiers to keep clean areas within limits, and those run whether or not a batch is in the reactor. That gives a steady base load right through the 7 am to 6 pm window that counts for set-off on LTMD and HT connections. A unit with this kind of profile should be able to use nearly every unit a well-sized roof plant makes, with little left over to sell back.
Dye and intermediate makers are different. Their heavy loads swing with each batch, and many run through the night. For them the useful step is to separate the steady daytime base (utilities, ETP pumps, cooling towers) from the swings, and size solar to the base.
Roofs that have seen decades of use
An estate this old has a wide spread of roofs: early sheds re-sheeted several times, lean-to extensions added between blocks, and multi-floor RCC buildings on plots that were rebuilt. Before panels go on any of them, the installer should check purlins and trusses for corrosion, confirm that fixings will go into sound steel, and see whether older fragile sheets need replacing first. If a roof still has asbestos cement sheets, do not drill or walk on them; replacement is the safer route.
Air quality adds to the wear. In January 2010 the Ministry of Environment and Forests declared Ahmedabad's Naroda and Odhav area a Critically Polluted Area, and a CAG chapter quoting CPCB data gives it a CEPI score of 57.11 for 2018. Coated structures, stainless steel fasteners near acid fumes and regular cleaning are sensible defaults here. On flat RCC roofs, check that rainwater drains freely, since standing water around mounting feet is a common cause of leaks.
Hanspura: the small estate next door
Hanspura GIDC sits beside Naroda and is far smaller: 145 plots covering about 6.7 hectares, with 90 allotted in GIDC's October 2026 table. That leaves 55 plots not yet allotted.
A unit that is still at the drawing stage has an easy advantage. The roof can be planned for panels from day one: a clear south-facing area free of vents, purlins spaced to take mounting rails, a safe ladder or stair to the roof, and a cable route down to the main panel. Adding these at design time costs far less trouble than retrofitting later.
Before you ask for a quote
- Your latest bill, so the installer knows whether Torrent or UGVCL handles the application and which tariff category you are on
- Twelve months of consumption, plus any interval data from your meter showing daytime use
- Roof drawings or at least measurements, and a note of stacks, vents and planned extensions
- If the shed is rented, the plot holder's written consent; GERC allows solar on rented premises and developer-owned systems
- Your CA's view on accelerated depreciation, since businesses do not get the PM Surya Ghar home subsidy
