A full estate where the roof is the spare land
GIDC now marks it Saturated, which means fresh land comes only through auction or the allotment of an adjoining plot. In October 2026 its table showed 2,215 of 2,218 plots already allotted.
For an owner this sets the limits of a solar plan. There is no spare corner for a ground-mounted array, so plant size follows usable roof area once space is left for vents, scrubbers, water tanks and a walkway for cleaning. Process sheds in an estate like this often carry exhaust stacks and ducting that shade part of the roof, so a proper site visit beats any layout drawn from a satellite picture.
What a dye or chemical unit actually runs in daylight
An older, undated MSME-DI profile of Ahmedabad district lists a dyestuff cluster at Vatva with 419 functional units. Dyes sit alongside specialty chemicals, pharma intermediates and engineering shops in the estate.
In a typical dye or intermediate unit the electrical load comes from reactor agitators, centrifuges, dryers, cooling tower fans, chillers and effluent treatment pumps, and batch plants of this kind often run around the clock. Under GERC's rules, LTMD and HT consumers can set solar off only against use between 7 am and 6 pm (over the billing cycle for LTMD, day by day for HT), and surplus is not carried forward.
So the figure that matters is your daytime load curve, not the size of the monthly bill. Ask for interval data from your meter, or log a few weeks of daylight consumption, and size the plant to what the unit draws on an ordinary working day.
Fumes, dust and the Critically Polluted Area tag
In January 2010 the Ministry of Environment and Forests declared Vatva a Critically Polluted Area. A CAG audit chapter that reproduces CPCB's index gives Vatva a Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) score of 70.94 for 2018. For a roof plant this means planning for panels to pick up a film of fine dust and process residue faster than they would on a house in the western suburbs.
That leads to a few practical choices before anything is fixed:
- Hot-dip galvanised or coated mounting structures, and stainless steel fasteners wherever acid or chlorine vapour is around
- A written cleaning schedule that notes the water used, because hard water leaves a deposit of its own
- Panel rows kept out of the plume from stacks and scrubber outlets
- A look at the roof sheets first; sheets already eaten by process vapour should be replaced before the panels go up, not after
Torrent Power paperwork for a Vatva unit
Vatva falls within the area where Torrent Power holds the distribution licence for Ahmedabad, so most units here pay Torrent. Some estates on the city's edge are billed by UGVCL instead, so check the supplier named on your own bill before anyone files an application. Torrent groups business supply as Non-RGP for small connections, LTMD for demand-based LT and HTMD-1 for HT.
Papers grow with plant size. Torrent's documents list asks for the Chief Electrical Inspector's drawing approval once a system crosses 10 kW, adds a backup generation meter with CT above 20 kW, and has a separate metering panel drawing for HT consumers above 150 kW. GERC's 2024 amendment dropped the technical feasibility study for systems up to 10 kW and set approval timelines, which mostly helps the smaller engineering shops.
One rooftop project can go up to 1,000 kW under GERC's net metering rules. If your load is far bigger than any roof you have, the installer can explain captive and open-access options.
Rented sheds and who signs
If you run your unit from a rented shed, you are not shut out. GERC's rules allow rooftop solar on rented premises, and they also allow a developer to own the system while you buy its power. You will need the plot holder's written consent for the roof and a clear note on who removes the plant if the lease ends.
Businesses do not get the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, which is only for homes. An owned plant may qualify for accelerated depreciation; ask your CA how that fits your accounts. If you want, we can connect you with one checked installer who works in Vatva.
